Timothy Hagen - Flutist | Composer

YOUFLUTE: An inclusive summer seminar
June 7-11, 2021

What do you value? This essential question influences the goals you set and the actions you take to achieve those goals. Because they are at the heart of living, your values are also central to your music-making. The way you play, practice, and perform are all extensions of your values. Purposefully acknowledging and cultivating those values alongside your artistry can have a major impact on the way you work and live.

Hi! I’m Tim Hagen, a flutist, composer, and educator, among many other pursuits. (You can read more about my professional life here, if you like.) I value connection, compassion, justice, storytelling, and empathy. These are the values that drove me to become not only an artist but also a teacher and facilitator, working with all ages and experience levels. Learning to purposefully connect who I am on the inside to what I do on the outside has given great meaning to my work and enriched my life.

Now, I’m ready to start having the same conversations with others that I have with myself. Enter YouFlute, a virtual, inclusive summer seminar that connects internal reflection to real-world work. There are very few prerequisites: you are a human, you play the flute, and you have access to Zoom teleconferencing software.

That’s it. You don’t need to have played for a minimum period of time. You don’t need to be a certain age or have a degree. There are no residency or repertoire requirements. Join from wherever you are and bring whatever you want to play. From near or far, with sonatas, scales, or studies, all flutists and music are welcome. (Even if your music doesn't start with S! No sonatas? Let's hear some hymns or your favorite songs. When I say ALL flutists and music are welcome, I mean ALL!)

YouFlute explores four different concepts over five days, with time split between performance classes, discussion, and socialization. While each day includes a special guest and discussion around a specific concept, the topics are interrelated, and it is likely that each will spill over into other days.

Each performer will be spotlighted three times over the course of the week (2x30 minutes, 1x20 minutes). How a spotlight is used is at the discretion of the performer. You can choose to play and receive feedback from your colleagues and me, for example, or we can use the time to explore best practices in teaching and pedagogy, community engagement, composing, chamber music, or any other area, with or without your flute. The work you do over the course of the week will determine what you highlight in your portion of YouFlute’s Celebration of Growth near the end of the week.

Auditors will be accepted for all spotlights and guest artist sessions.

Schedule Overview

June 7 – Reflection: What do you value? A seemingly simple question, yet one with profound implications. Guest: Marianne Gedigian, Professor of Flute, The University of Texas at Austin

June 8 – Cultivation: How can you align your work and your values? This question can be applied to every facet of your work, from individual practice to job applications to planning for recitals or other projects. Guest: Sarah Hollandsworth, Director of Sales and Marketing, JL Smith/Flute World

June 9 – Commitment: What goals do you want to set, and what is your plan for realizing them? Like our previous question, this one can also be asked at different levels, from single practice sessions to the execution of large, public projects. Guest: Dr. Tika Douthit, Assistant Professor of Music, Winston-Salem State University; Instructor in Flute, Catawba College

June 10 – Delivery: There is no question this day, just a directive: do. Our week of classes and discussions reach a climax with a joyous Celebration of Growth including all YouFlute performers. Guest: Jim Walker, Professor of Flute, University of Southern California and the Colburn School

June 11 – Reflection: How well did your work align with your intentions? We will unpack the previous day’s performances through this lens, which will translate to valuable feedback that can be used as you continue growing as artists and people. There is no guest on this day, just our little group of YouFluters.
